How teens use the internet in 2014
A new report from Pew Research Center reveals how American teens use the internet in 2014. The report is based on a survey of 1,060 teens aged 13 to 17 conducted between September and November 2014.
According to the report, Facebook is still the most popular social media platform among teens, with 71% of them using it. However, other platforms such as Instagram (52%), Snapchat (41%), Twitter (33%), Google+ (33%), Vine (24%) and Tumblr (14%) are also widely used by teens. Some teens use multiple platforms, while others have a single favorite.
And the study shows there has been an uptick in daily teen internet users, from 92% in 2014-15 to 97% today. In addition, the share of teens who say they are online almost constantly has roughly doubled since 2014-15 (46% now and 24% then). The share of teens who say they use the internet about once a day or more has grown slightly since 2014-15.[^1^]
The future of robotics and artificial intelligence
What will the world look like in 2025 when robots and artificial intelligence become more advanced and widespread A new report from Pew Research Center explores this question by asking experts and stakeholders about their predictions and concerns.
The report is based on an online canvassing of 1,896 experts and other respondents conducted between November 2013 and January 2014. The respondents were asked to choose one of two possible scenarios for the year 2025:
Robots and AI will have displaced significant numbers of both blue- and white-collar workers, with many service jobs either being automated or performed by low-paid workers from remote locations. Some social consequences will be positive, such as improved health care and education, but others will be negative, such as increased inequality, unemployment and social unrest.
Robots and AI will not displace more jobs than they create by 2025. They will enhance human capacities and empower workers, entrepreneurs and consumers. They will also create new industries and opportunities that will mitigate the social problems caused by automation.
The results show that the experts are divided on this issue, with 48% choosing the first scenario and 52% choosing the second scenario. However, even those who are optimistic about the future of robotics and AI acknowledge that there will be significant challenges and disruptions along the way.[^2^]
Snowden's question to Putin
Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked classified documents about mass surveillance programs, made a rare public appearance on April 17, 2014. He appeared on video from an undisclosed location during President Putin's live annual Q&A exchange with the public. Snowden asked whether Russia intercepted, stored or analyzed individuals' communications.
Putin replied, \"Russia uses surveillance techniques for spying on individuals only with the sanction of a court order. This is our law, and therefore there is no mass surveillance in our country.\"[^3^]
Some critics have denounced Snowden's question as a propaganda stunt for Putin, who has been accused of cracking down on dissent and violating human rights in Russia. Others have defended Snowden's question as a legitimate attempt to hold Putin accountable for his policies.[^4^]
Snowden himself said his question was intended \"to mirror the now infamous exchange in US Senate intelligence committee hearings between senator Ron Wyden and the director of national intelligence, James Clapper, about whether the NSA collected records on millions of Americans, and to invite either an important concession or a clear evasion.\" ec8f644aee
